What began as a high schooler’s passion for crafting tiny model planes in her science club has evolved into Natalia Gonzalez’s vibrant world of crochet.
While her interests have changed over the years, her love for creating something by hand has remained constant. Her journey from crafting models from paper to crocheting unique accessories has been a journey filled with self-discovery, creative exploration, and entrepreneurship.
Natalia’s journey into crocheting began simply: she made a sweater out of stitched-together squares.
“It wasn’t hard,” she laughs. “But it was the spark that lit my crochet obsession.”
The sweater started her passion for crocheting, and what once was just a hobby, soon became more than a pastime; it became a way for her to explore a new business venture.
“Crocheting became an addiction. I lost so much yarn throughout the years,” she says.
Armed with yarn, hooks, and a creative spirit, Natalia has transformed her craft into a small business. She crafts eye-catching earrings, bracelets, and other accessories that have quickly gained attention for their intricate designs and unique aesthetic.
Through social media platforms like Instagram, e-commerce apps like Etsy, and word-of-mouth recommendations, Natalia has built a loyal following of customers who appreciate the artistry and personal touch behind every piece she makes.
Encouraged by the idea of sharing her passion with a wider audience—and supplementing her income as a college student—she decided to take her crochet skills more seriously. Her decision to turn her craft into a business wasn’t an easy one.
“Sometimes, it’s overwhelming,” Natalia admits. “Especially during midterms or finals when I have to pause taking orders for a bit. But at the same time, I love that I can set my own pace and still do something I enjoy.”
This sense of autonomy has been particularly valuable as she navigates college life. Being financially independent has also allowed her to cover college expenses and purchase the materials she needs to continue expanding her business.
“I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that people love what I create,” she says. “When I see someone wearing one of my pieces or hear that they’ve gifted it to someone else, it makes all the hard work worth it.”
One of Natalia’s customers, Victor Lee, first discovered her business through Ball State’s Snapchat stories.
“I saw that they were promoting her crocheted flowers for Valentine’s Day, and I thought they were so pretty,” Victor shares.
Victor purchased a small bouquet of crocheted flowers, and he says he was impressed not only by their beauty but by the care and thoughtfulness behind the presentation.
Professor Imran Syed, who teaches entrepreneurship at Ball State University, has seen many students like Natalia develop entrepreneurial skills.
“Natalia represents the modern student entrepreneur—resourceful, passionate, and willing to adapt. Her ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with digital marketing is exactly what makes small businesses thrive today,” he explains.
Professor Syed highlights the significance of social media.
“In today’s digital age, platforms like Instagram and Facebook are essential for growing your brand. You can directly interact with your audience and showcase your products in a way that was impossible just a few decades ago,” he says.
More than just business strategies, Professor Syed emphasizes the importance of staying true to one’s passion.
“Entrepreneurship is about more than making money—it’s about creating something that matters to you and to others. Natalia’s business isn’t just about selling jewelry; it’s about telling a story, sharing her heritage, and building a community,” says Professor Syed.
